Strategic Plan Update

The Executive Leadership Team met with Phil McCredden this week to analyse and discuss the data that was collated through the Shared Futures Survey and the Focus Group discussions. This was an engaging session with plenty of conversation and commentary around the feedback WLC received. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank those stakeholders that took the time to respond in such a thoughtful and insightful manner. In amidst the affirming responses and comments, there was also constructive feedback which will be used to help develop the strategic direction of Wimmera Lutheran College in the years to come. The Executive Team will meet with Phil early next year to finalise the Signposts and key objectives of the Strategic Plan.

Work continues in other key areas of the amalgamation with a focus on the following key areas including:

• Uniform
• Mission, Vision and Values statements
• Website development
• Campus and Bus signage
• Corporate Stationery items (Letterheads, powerpoint slides, business cards etc)

WLC Board Update

The WLC Board met for the final time this year on Wednesday night. There were a number of key agenda items discussed, including the approval of the 2026 Budget. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Board and thank them for their support of WLC this year. In a short period of time, the new Board has formed a strong connection and is being led with purpose and direction by chair Mark Hughes and the other Board members including:

WLC is fortunate to have such a passionate and skilled collection of Board members with experience in Governance who will continue to lead WLC in 2026.

Finishing the Year Strong

As we enter the final stretch of the school year, it’s natural to feel tired, busy, or stretched. Yet this season is also filled with opportunity, an opportunity to reflect, refocus, and finish well. Whether you are a student working hard to complete tasks, a teacher giving your all to provide meaningful learning, or a parent supporting your child through these last weeks, your efforts matter. Every act of perseverance contributes to a strong and positive ending.

The Bible reminds us in Galatians 6:9:
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

These words encourage us to keep going, to stay committed, stay hopeful, and trust that the work we put in now will bear fruit. Finishing strong isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up with purpose. It’s about encouraging one another, celebrating progress, and giving our best with the time we have left. Together, as a united school community, we can close the year with gratitude, energy, and pride.

Let’s take these final weeks as an opportunity to shine, support one another, and finish the year strong, knowing that God walks with us every step of the way.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:1-2.

Most, if not all of us are familiar with the story of the three wise men who travelled from the East to visit Jesus at the time of his birth in Bethlehem. Since childhood we have seen images on Christmas cards of the Wise men travelling on their camels as they follow the star leading them to Jesus' manger or seen them bowing before the new-born king alongside the shepherds who also came to worship him. 

Interestingly, some of the things we think we know about the Wise men probably aren't factual. The book of Matthew tells us the Wise men, or Magi travelled from the East. Historians think they probably travelled from modern day Saudi Arabia, Iraq or Iran. The bible does not say specifically there were three. There may have been over a hundred. The tradition of there being three came from the fact they presented three gifts. Historians are almost certain that the wise men did not arrive in Bethlehem the night of Jesus birth as the shepherd did. The time taken to travel from the East meant they probably arrived in Bethlehem when Jesus was a toddler, one or two years old. The bible says that the star the wise men were following stopped over the place the child was staying; the family was most probably living in different accommodation than a stable by then. 

We can be certain that the Wise men presented three gifts to Jesus - Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. These three gifts are said to represent three aspects of Jesus nature. Gold, the most precious and valuable metal is said to represent Jesus Kingship, that he was the Messiah (anointed one) sent by God. Frankincense, an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes, because it was used for Holy purposes is said to represent Jesus' divine priesthood. Myrrh, also used in perfume and incense, was traditionally used for embalming. For this reason, it is said to represent Jesus' humanity and foretell his sacrificial death. These three gifts each represent something that Jesus gave to humanity:

1. He gave us his Kingship. He demonstrated servant kingship that was kind, generous, merciful and not self-seeking.

2. He revealed his divinity to us by coming to earth to demonstrate the true nature of God; his character, miraculous power and love.

3. Jesus gave us his humanity and sacrificial death. In coming to earth to live among us Jesus experienced every hardship and sorrow we have. He knew what it was to be hungry, tired, cold, and to feel physical pain, he experienced loneliness, rejection, sorrow, grief. His death on the cross was awful. But he gave us that, for our sakes.

There are three other things that the wise men gave Jesus that we are also able to give to Jesus this Christmas.

1. Our fidelity. Fidelity means faithfulness, devotion and loyalty. The wise men were told by King Herod to return to him and let him know where Jesus was. He said this was so that he could worship him too, but was in fact so he could kill him and remove a rival for his Kingship. Herod could have killed the Wise men for their disobedience, but they chose to be faithful and loyal to the newborn baby. We can give Jesus our fidelity too. To be loyal, faithful and devoted to him above any other person or thing.

2. Due recognition - acknowledging who Jesus is. The wise men acknowledged Jesus for who he is, the promised Messiah of God, the chosen one and the divine saviour of the world. We can give Jesus this same honour of acknowledging who he truly is.

3. Worship. The wise men gave Jesus their worship. We can give this too, our heartfelt honor, love and praise.

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Matthew 2:9-12.

May you and your family know the love of Jesus this Christmas. May you receive the gifts of his divine love, kingship and eternal life. May you give to him in return as a response to his grace, what he is due. God bless.

As we move even closer to the end of the school year, there is a growing sense of anticipation throughout our community. The classrooms are alive with learning, creativity and moments that remind us why this time of year is so special. Our students continue to shine, supporting one another, celebrating achievements and embracing the joy that comes with the upcoming Christmas season.

In these final weeks, we are reminded not only of how far we’ve come, but also of the light we are called to share with others. As we prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus, we reflect on the blessings of hope, peace and togetherness. It is inspiring to see our staff and students finish the year with such enthusiasm, resilience and gratitude.

“And the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy for all people.’” Luke 2:10

Class Lists

Class lists for 2026 will be emailed home on Monday afternoon, in preparation for Transition Day on Tuesday. Please remember organising class lists is a very complex process and staff have strived to consider all students needs when preparing the lists.

Transition Day

Tuesday 2 December is our whole school Transition Day. Our Year 6 students will be attending secondary school for the day, 2026 Foundation students will be joining us from 9:15am until 12:45pm. Where possible, students will spend the morning with their teachers and classmates for 2026. Our Year 5 students are looking forward to meeting their buddies on this day.

SRC Shopping Day

Members of the SRC will be accompanying Mrs Harvey and Mrs Schneider on the annual Christmas shopping trip on Monday 1 December. Funds raised by the SRC this year will be used to purchase gifts for the K-Mart Wishing Tree. Thank you to everyone who has supported the SRC’s fundraising events this year.

Foundation Celebration Night

On Thursday 4 December, the Foundation students of 2025 will celebrate their first year of primary school in the MPC with their families at 6.30pm. It has been a pleasure to watch them grow in confidence and independence and would like to congratulate students on their achievements. We give thanks to our staff who have helped support the youngest students of our college this year.

Volunteer’s Morning Tea

We invite all parent volunteers who have contributed to our school community to attend a morning tea on Friday 5 December at 11am. We thank all volunteers for their time and support within our college and we look forward to this opportunity to show our appreciation.

Last Day of Term/Closing Services

Wednesday 10 December is the last day of Term 4 for Junior School students. All students are to wear their formal summer uniform. The Years 3-6 Closing Service with Award Ceremony will occur at 11:30am in the MPC, followed by the F-2 Closing service at 1:50pm. Parents are welcome to attend either or both closing services. Dismissal will be at 3:20pm.

Year 12 Graduation

We celebrated the Year 12 Graduation on Friday the 21st of November. This is a very important and special day on the WLC calendar. We began with the formal service during the day, where we were led in Worship by Pastor Hans and celebrated the academic achievements of our students.
In the evening, we held our Graduation Dinner, where students, their families and staff celebrated the year and the fun that has been shared over the last 13 years with this cohort. A special highlight was the Year 12 band, who entertained us with their songs and dance moves.
As we farewelled the Class of 2025, it was wonderful to reflect on the times we have shared and to see how far they have come since starting in Prep or joining us in later years. We wish all students the very best in their future endeavours.
We also farewelled a number of families. We wish them well and thank them for their support and their journey with us here at Wimmera Lutheran College.

Sky Tour

On Wednesday night, the WLC community was treated to brilliant views of the Southern Cross and the Pleiades (the Seven Sisters), as well as our closest neighbouring stars—Alpha Centauri and Proxima Centauri. We also observed the Andromeda Galaxy, a nebula (the birthplace of new stars), the beautiful rings of Saturn, and the Sea of Tranquility and Serenity on the moon, which were landing sites for the Apollo Missions.

Notes and Nibbles

Notes and Nibbles is an annual event to celebrate the instrumental music program. On Tuesday night, it was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase the progress they have made with their instruments this year. Yet again, it was a fantastic chance for our community to come together. I thank Michelle Hahn and her team for making this event possible, and I thank our instrumental teachers for their support and encouragement of our students throughout the year.

Year 10 and 11 Students

Today, we farewelled our Year 10 and 11 students for 2025. We celebrated with Year Level events and the closing service. This was a wonderful way to acknowledge the year and celebrate the achievements of our students. We wish all students and families a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday, and we look forward to seeing you all in 2026.

State Volleyball Results

Last Friday, 17 WLC students attended the State Volleyball Championships at Dandenong Stadium. Our girls team won two of their three round robin games to proceed to the semi finals where they were eventually defeated by a very experienced and talented team. Congratulations to Emily L, Ava L, Indi W, Azahlia B, Emmy I, Layla K and Evie K on the great achievement of placing as the fourth best girls primary school volleyball team in the state in 2025.

The boys team also competed at the state volleyball championships playing three round robin games. Unfortunately the boys came up against stronger opposition on the day and weren’t able to progress to the semi finals as they were defeated in their three games. Congratulations to Peter S, Lachie D, Tristan VZ, Jaxon E, Noah M, Lachie E, Dusty P, Lachie H, Jack Y and Liam R on finishing as the eight best placed boys primary school team in Victoria.

Greater Western Region Cricket Blast

Eight of our Year 5 & 6 boys competed at the Greater Western Region Cricket Blast last Wednesday. The boys played very well winning three of their four matches to finish second in the competition. Their only loss was to the eventual competition winners by a narrow margin of fourteen runs. Congratulations to Lachie Dunn, Lachie H, Lachie E, Peter S, Jack S, Steele O and Felix F on the positive way they represented our school at this event.

Sports Development Program

Basketball trials for students wishing to participate in the WLC Sports Development Program were conducted last Friday. Congratulations to those students who attended, they will now be involved in this program every available Friday during term one 2026.

Every parent knows that moment: the eye roll, the sigh, the sarcastic comment, or even outright refusal to do what you’ve asked. Whether your child is five or fifteen, backchat can leave you feeling frustrated, disrespected, and unsure of how to respond.

But what if I told you that backchat might actually be a sign of healthy development? An inconvenient and clumsy sign, perhaps. But a sign nonetheless. How so?

When children talk back, it often shows they feel safe enough to express disagreement with authority - including ours. This isn’t rebellion for rebellion’s sake; it’s the stirring of critical thinking. They’re developing their own sense of what’s fair and reasonable, and they’re brave enough to voice it, even when they know we might not like it.

The way we respond in those moments can either nurture their growing autonomy and problem-solving abilities… or teach them that challenging authority is dangerous and their perspectives don’t matter.

Here’s what parents need to know - and do - kids backchat, from preschool through high school.

Why Kids Talk Back

Backchat is rarely out-and-out defiance. More often, it’s a child’s attempt to assert some control over their world when they feel powerless. When kids experience:

• Over-control (decisions imposed without their input)
• Overwhelm (expectations that feel impossible to meet)
• Disconnection (sensing their thoughts and feelings don’t count)

…they’re more likely to push back. And because they’re still learning how to navigate complex social situations, it comes out in ways we don’t like-as sass, sarcasm, or outright refusal.

What Parents Can Do

The goal isn’t to silence your child’s voice or demand unquestioning compliance, but to help them learn more effective ways to communicate their needs and concerns whilst maintaining connection. Here are three approaches: 

1. Get Curious, Not Furious

Instead of meeting their attitude with your own authority (“Don’t you dare talk to me like that!“), try genuine curiosity about their perspective.

Ask yourself: What’s underneath this behaviour? What need are they trying to meet?

You might say, “It sounds like you’re really frustrated about this. Help me understand what’s bothering you.“

This invites collaboration rather than demanding submission.

2. Acknowledge Their Reality - Even When You Can’t Change Everything

You don’t have to agree with your child to validate their experience. Sometimes just being heard defuses the tension.

“I can see why that feels unfair to you.” or “You wish you had more say in what happens in your day, don’t you?”

This shows you’re genuinely interested in their inner world-not just their compliance-even if certain expectations still need to be met.

3. Invite Problem-Solving Together

Rather than simply laying down the law, try collaborative problem-solving:

“This isn’t working for either of us. What ideas do you have that might help?”

“I need X to happen. You’re telling me Y is important to you. How can we make this work for both of us?”

If emotions are running high, suggest a pause:

“We’re both pretty heated right now. Let’s take a break and come back to this when we can really listen to each other.”

The Bigger Picture

We can’t eliminate backchat entirely - nor should we want to. Children who never question authority often struggle to think critically or advocate for themselves later in life.

What we can do is help our children learn that their voice matters, while also developing the social skills to express themselves effectively. When we respond to backchat with curiosity rather than control, we’re teaching them that it’s safe to disagree, that problems can be solved together, and that relationships can handle conflict.

Your kids are learning from you every day how to handle disagreement and navigate power dynamics. The question isn’t whether they’ll encounter conflict in life - they will. The question is whether they’ll have learned to handle it with respect, creativity, and connection.

Quick Reminders for Parents:

• Stay curious - their “attitude” often masks a legitimate concern
• Remember, they’re practicing important life skills (even when it’s inconvenient)
• Look for ways to share power where possible
• Model the respectful communication you want to see
• Focus on connection and problem-solving, not winning

We’ve all done it.

Our child hits a sibling, breaks something, or lashes out—and we respond, “Say sorry!” It feels like the right thing to do. We’re trying to teach empathy and accountability.

But here’s the problem: forcing kids to apologise teaches them to lie.

In Season 1 of my Channel 9 hit TV show, Parental Guidance, I made this claim and stirred up national controversy. But let’s unpack the truth behind it—and what to do instead.

Why Forced Apologies Often Backfire

Imagine being told to apologise when you’re still angry, embarrassed, or feeling misunderstood. You say the words, but you don’t mean them. That’s exactly how kids feel. You spit those words across the room at the person. And guess what – they don’t believe you, and you still feel aggrieved.

A forced apology doesn’t build empathy or repair relationships—it can actually make things worse. It:

• Creates resentment, not remorse.
• Focuses the child on their own hurt rather than what they’ve done.
• Teaches compliance, not compassion.

So What Can We Do Instead?

Here’s how to raise children who apologise sincerely—and learn to repair relationships in meaningful ways.

1. Give Kids Time and Space

When kids are upset, they’re not in the right emotional state to reflect—let alone apologise. Instead of demanding instant remorse, try:

“Let’s take some time to cool off.”

“I can see you’re really upset. We’ll talk when you’re ready.”

This allows both sides to calm down and consider how to make things right.

2. Coach, Don’t Coerce. Support, Don’t Solve.

Ask questions that help your child reflect:

“How do you think your sister felt?”

“What could you do to help fix things?”

“What do you think would make things better between you two?”

Support them through the repair process without demanding an immediate “sorry.”

3. Acknowledge Their Feelings Too

Often, kids resist apologising because they feel wronged too. Recognise their emotions first:

“It looks like you’re still really frustrated. Do you want to tell me what happened?”

When children feel heard, they’re more likely to consider the other person’s perspective.

4. Model What a Real Apology Looks Like

Children learn best by example. When you mess up, own it.

Try this 4-step apology:

1. Say sorry. (“I’m sorry.”)
2. Name what you did. (“Because I yelled at you.”)
3. Acknowledge the impact. (“I can see it made you feel scared.”)
4. Ask for forgiveness. (“Will you forgive me?”)

This shows your child how to take responsibility with humility and care. Teach this model and watch how sincere their apologies become. (And yours… it’s profoundly hard and humbling to ask “Will you forgive me”, and enormously freeing when they say “yes”.)

True Apologies Are Chosen, Not Forced

A coerced apology may check a box, but it doesn’t change hearts.

Instead, let’s help our kids:

• Reflect on their actions,
• Understand the impact,
• And feel safe enough to say sorry because they mean it.

Apologies are about repair, not compliance.

And like anything worthwhile in parenting, that takes time, patience, and modelling.

Try This at Home:

Next time your child hurts someone, pause. Don’t rush in with “Say sorry!” Instead, say:

“I know you’re upset. Let’s take a moment. Later, we can talk about how to make things right.”

You might be surprised at the heartfelt apology that comes when they’re ready.

The myLearners Free Driving Lesson program offers a FREE 60-minute Lesson with a professional driving instructor for learners aged 16–19 who have completed 10–30 hours of
driving practice.
